A Success Story
Coming Home: IHT’s Campaign for MDI
There is a serious threat facing the island.
A lack of affordable, year-round housing on MDI was already at a critical juncture before COVID-19 hit. An unexpected twist caused by the pandemic has been a spike in out-of-state residents purchasing homes in Maine.
The housing shortage on the island affects businesses. Large employers such as MDI Hospital and The Jackson Laboratory say that the lack of affordable housing affects recruitment and long-term employment.
A lack of supply of affordable housing on MDI, combined with an increase in demand for it, is eroding our community and driving out local families. If we don’t act now, MDI is poised to change radically into a hollowed-out version of itself.
The right time, the right organization
IHT is seeing a tremendous increase in support and demand for our year-round housing efforts. More than 30 households are awaiting IHT housing opportunities.
